BLUE

A Panoramic Representation of the Present State of the Danube

“BLUE” provides a real-time visualization of the Danube’s flow speed, wave formation, and water level. Various bubbles flow through the virtual Danube, constantly gathering information about the river and its surroundings from the internet. When visitors interact with them, the bubbles transfer the knowledge they have acquired. “BLUE” is not just a newsroom; it also functions as a clock, reflecting the passage of time and the changing seasons. The installation adapts to the time of day and current weather conditions, reacting to day and night, as well as to rain and snow. As a result, “BLUE” is in a constant state of renewal. It invites us to reflect on the Danube and the endless flow of time.

This work was commissioned for the opening of the new wing of the Ars Electronica Center in 2009 and created as a site-specific art piece. It was designed to fit the context of the main gallery, located below the water level of the Danube.
