From Ear To Mouth

What does it mean to “think” together with artificial intelligence?

From Ear to Mouth is a generative sound installation that explores the meaning of “thinking” in collaboration with artificial intelligence.

Upon entering the installation, the audience encounters two large screens suspended on opposite sides of the room. One screen displays a film of an ear, while the other, across the room, shows a film of a mouth. These films never play simultaneously but alternate between the ear and the mouth. The ear is directed toward the audience, while the mouth creates poetry.

When the ear gestures as if it is listening to the audience, they are prompted to answer a question about “thinking,” generated by the artificial intelligence. After receiving the audience’s response, the artificial intelligence begins to sing a song. A new question about “thinking,” based on the response, is then generated. Through participation in this endless loop of questioning, humans and AI together create a form of music with no definitive answer.

In this installation, the audience will not encounter a conventional AI designed to answer their questions. Instead, they meet a new intelligence that generates questions, and by attempting to answer them, they themselves are transformed.

In the 21st century, as we coexist with artificial intelligence, how will the concept of “thinking” evolve for humans?
