TRIART

Creating Art from the Data of Triathlons

TRIART (Triathlon x Art) is an art project that expresses the individual stories of participants in a triathlon, as well as the collective narrative of all involved.

Individual sports such as triathlons and marathons have traditionally been broadcast and edited as a single narrative centered around the winner. But what if we could focus on each participant and create a story based on data? And what if we could produce an art piece that reflects the collective moment when the first athlete crosses the finish line, seen from the perspective of all the participants?

In TRIART, a visual narrative based on information collected during the event, known as the TRIART LOG, is printed and handed to each participant at the finish line. This narrative combines various elements, including time data derived from an RFID tag attached to the athlete, social media and Twitter updates supporting the athlete, statistical data generated during the race, and global changes or news happening while the race is taking place.

At the finish line, participants will also receive a pin art piece representing each athlete. Using the information from the TRIART LOG, participants will place pins on a large BOTAORI canvas. BOTAORI is a traditional weaving technique unique to Takamatsu, and this canvas is designed to symbolize the triathlon course. As athletes place their pins, a vast art piece—resembling a collective photograph—will emerge, based on the positions of all athletes when the first one crosses the finish line.

TRIART is recognized as a unique work of art that adds new meaning and dialogue to the data generated from the sport of triathlon.
