Thinking Candle

What does an AI candle ponder?

Observing the process of AI generated animation, one cannot help but imagine the act of sifting through fragments of human memory—like a carousel of recollections drifting softly in and out of focus. The subtle shifting of images evokes the gentle, flickering glow of a candle.
The five lights displayed in this exhibition are continuously generated, moment by moment, fueled by memories provided through photos and messages collected by the artist during the exhibition period. Each memory flickers on the screen of a smartphone, gradually transforming into new and unforeseen images. It is like the flame of a candle, endlessly shifting its form.
Each “candle” is not connected to any power source; as its battery gradually drains, the images become dimmer and fade away, just like a real candle. The training and operation of AI models require immense computational resources, resulting in substantial increases in global energy consumption. When lighting an AI candle, what thoughts and emotions do we choose to project, and in what forms might they appear?
